1. We undertake the precept of refraining from killing.
In undertaking this precept we acknowledge the interconnection of all beings and our respect for all life. We agree to refine our understanding of not killing and non-harming in all our actions. We commit ourselves to fulfilling this precept in the spirit of reverence for life.
2. We undertake the precept of refraining from stealing.
We agree to not take that which does not belong to us and to respect the property of others. We agree to bring consciousness to the use of all of the earth’s resources in a respectful and ecological way.
3. We undertake the precept of refraining from sexual misconduct.
We agree to avoid creating harm through sexuality and to avoid sexual exploitation or relationships of a sexual manner that are outside of the bounds of the relationship commitments we have made to another or that involve another who has made vows to another. Teachers with vows of celibacy will live according to their vows. Teachers in committed relationships will honor their vows and refrain from adultery. All teachers agree not to use their teaching role to exploit their authority and position in order to assume a sexual relationship with a student.
4. We undertake the precept of refraining from false speech.
We agree to speak that which is true and useful and to refrain from gossip in our community. We agree to hold in confidence what is explicitly told to us in confidence. We agree to cultivate conscious and clear communication, and to cultivate the quality of loving-kindness and honesty as the basis of our speech.
5. We undertake the precept of refraining from intoxicants that cause heedlessness or loss of awareness.
It is clear that substance abuse is the cause of tremendous suffering. We agree that there should be no use of intoxicants while teaching. We agree not to abuse or misuse intoxicants at any time.

Standardised SIT Marketing
As you take your Six-week Introductory Training in Mindfulness (SIT) courses out to the public we thought it would be useful to have some concise language and MTI imaging to use in your course descriptions.
You are welcome to use the MTI Certified Logo but please use the term MTI Certified Teacher in your marketing. Please do not edit or distort, append the logos in any way. The Logo pack contains Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop files for print and online use, in both colour and black and white.
In your marketing and invitations to your SIT courses, please feel free to use the following language.
SIT Mindfulness
This Six week Introductory Training (SIT) in Mindfulness will teach you to develop a focused and embodied attention, self awareness, emotional intelligence, and greater sense of ease and well being. You will learn a variety of mindfulness meditations and practical ways to integrate mindfulness into daily activities at work, home and in relationships.
The course will include the following:
- Training in meditation, developing awareness of breath, body, feelings and thoughts.
- Managing stress and learning how to shift from reaction to response.
- Recognizing and letting go of unhelpful habitual thoughts and mind states.
- Exploring, understanding and working with a range of emotional experience.
If you would like to contribute to the growing body of mindfulness research, we offer the following questionnaire for you to administer before and after your standard SIT course. This will also help us to begin tracking the efficacy of the SIT program in a systematic way.
If you will be collecting this information for a study through a university or hospital, you will also need to have it cleared by your Institutional Review Board (IRB). Each organization has its own standards and rules, so please be sure that you are following those.
For anyone who wishes to participate, please have your students complete the following questionnaire before your first class, and once again after the completion of your final class session. To make accessing the SIT Research Questionnaire easier for your students and for us to collect, it is available through the public side of our website.
We have created a SIT Research Fact Sheet for you.
Description
The purpose of this study is to measure the efficacy of the SIT Mindfulness course for managing stress and increasing emotional awareness. Mindfulness practices have been shown to be useful in these areas. The current study will measure SIT students’ stress and emotional awareness before, during and after the six-week course.
Risks and Benefits
Mindfulness practices have been shown to be beneficial in managing the symptoms of stress, improving attention and memory, and supporting the experience of positive emotions. Mindfulness practices may result in minor discomfort from closing eyes, slow physical movements, and focusing on breath/body sensations. Also, talking about stressors may evoke physical and emotional discomfort.
Time Commitment and Payment
All research for this study will take place within the SIT course. There is no additional time commitment and no payment for participating in the study.
Confidentiality
Your survey responses will be collated by alphabetical IDs, not by your name. No names will be used in the reporting of results.
Right to Withdraw
Your participation in this study is entirely voluntary. You may choose not to participate without any adverse consequences to you. Should you choose to participate and later wish to withdraw from the study, you may discontinue your participation at that time without consequence.
